Anxiety is a natural reaction to dangerous situations that helps us to survive and avoid many troubles. The body mobilizes all its possibilities: substances are thrown out to speed up the heartbeat, breathing becomes quicker. Muscles are ready for sharp and rapid movements. But the too frequent use of such a protective mechanism exhausts both physically and morally. Especially if there are no grounds for such serious reactions, which is understood by the mind, but not by the subconscious mind.
In this case, people often cannot do anything without the help of a specialist. Treatment of anxiety disorders is carried out by several basic methods:
- psychotherapeutic effects, individual or group,
- use of medicines,
- social adaptation.
As one of the most commonly used drugs, including without prescription ones, we can identify Zoloft.
The antidepressant Zoloft belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). However, it has very little effect on the reuptake of other neurotransmitters (in particular, norepinephrine and dopamine). The drug does not increase adrenergic activity, does not have anticholinergic or sedative action and is not a stimulant. In addition, during the administration of Zoloft antidepressant drug addiction cannot develop, nor does weight gain increase.
Recently there appeared official data, which speak in favor of the effectiveness of Zoloft in the treatment of chronic depression. A group of American scientists conducted a 7-month study (with patients being studied in 12 US research centers), during which it was found that depressive symptoms only return in a quarter of patients (no more than 26%).
Another multicenter (8 US research centers) study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of Sertraline and Imipramine in the treatment of chronic depression complicated by anxiety elements. After a three-month course, Sertraline proved to be somewhat more effective than Imipramine: in 60% of cases, compared to 58%, patients were able to get rid of the anxiety component completely. At the end of treatment, the general mental state improved significantly. In addition, foreign scientists have proven the effectiveness of Sertraline in combating seasonal and atypical depression, as well as in the treatment of dysthymia.
In order to obtain a result there should be complete trust between a doctor and a patient, when a person is sure that his or her problems are taken seriously, but are not considered as a mental pathology. After excluding diseases that give similar symptoms (cardiovascular, endocrine), the patient is to be explained with the reasons for the appearance of unpleasant sensations.
Methods of relaxation, auto-training are necessarily used. An important point in therapy is a careful analysis of situations in which panic attacks and anxiety attacks occur. Recreating these episodes (exposure) is better combined with the development of ways to overcome somatic disorders. For example, often disturbing dizziness, a feeling of lack of air due to too frequent breathing and the resulting hyperventilation. Learning the right breathing allows you to control it even with the development of seizures.
Treatment of a constant sense of anxiety is impossible without changing the way of thinking. This is the basis for very effective cognitive therapy. The habitual thought forms (cognitions) program the behavior and do not let people escape from the vicious circle. Forming new settings and confirming them in his or her behavior while taking the necessary drugs, the patient is able to overcome constant anxiety and uncertainty.
